It started in 1909 as a socialist political event in the United States of America as National Women’s Day, when 15000 courageous women walked the streets of New York City demanding shorter work hours, better pay and the right to vote. Only in 1911 was it celebrated as International Women’s Day in Denmark, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and it went global in 1913. Fast forward to today, and women are not only voting but breaking the glass ceiling. The theme for the year of 2016 is “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality”.
